Why "Snake Oil"

An older relative once asked what user-experience design was, then said: "Sounds like a bunch of snake oil to me." Instead of arguing, I put it on the door.

Because the best designers aren't the ones who promise a cure — they're the ones who deliver one, and can explain the direction and value to everyone in the room. That's the whole job. The name keeps me honest about it.

The joke is the door. The work is the room.

I named it after the objection.
